The Jabiru story

We conducted our first school-aged program in 1986, in the laundry under what used to be known as the Green House  a disused former Scout Hut that had been taken over by the Bracken Ridge Family and Youth Support Group.

Our school-aged program gradually grew, and Jabiru was formed as an independent organisation in 1992. The name Jabiru was chosen to reflect our commitment to working with children, young people, and families. Through the name, we seek to be associated with the strong natural family, place, and community links that are important to the jabiru, Australia’s only true stork.

Since 1992, we have concentrated on two types of work: school-aged programs, and community-based support for young people and families.

The Jabiru Kids school-aged program grew rapidly during the late 1990s and early 2000s. By 2008, we were managing 15 programs across Brisbane.
