Program objectives
The program at each Jabiru Kids centre is designed to meet these objectives:
- Formal and informal structure and activities
- Child-selected and group determined activities
- Quiet relaxed space and busy active noisy space
- Active and passive games
- Age-specific and multi-age grouping of children
- Intensively supported and more distantly monitored activities
- Themed activities based on lateral thinking around a topic or idea
- Familiar structures, routines and rules, together with constant innovation, creativity and challenge
- Positive, strengths-based interaction with adults and other children, together with an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of being part of a group
- Short games and activities, together with longer term projects
- Diverse forms of creative expression that may include visual arts, music, drama, writing, and movement
- Time for homework
- Shared meal times
- Responsibility for contributing to small tasks such as tidying up or setting up
- Opportunities for older children to work with and support younger children
- Informally and formally teaching and learning specific age-appropriate skills
- Visits from people representing community diversity
- Appropriate involvement of children in food preparation and service.
